How Website Speed Affects Your Blog
Blogging is great. No matter if you’re a professional blogger or a hobbyist, sharing your content with people feels absolutely amazing. That’s why it’s such a shame if poor website speed drives your audience away.
Many blogs suffer from slow load times. I’m sure you can think of at least one example when you opened a website and it just took forever to load. It wasn’t pleasant, was it? You probably wanted to leave.
The bad news for website owners is that all internet users hate waiting. If your pages take long to load, more often than not, they’ll outright abandon the website.
HostingTribunal put together an infographic that illustrates this. According to them, 53% of visitors leave if load times exceed three seconds. Just three seconds are enough to lose most of your visitors!
Even if a visitor stays on a slow site, they spend less time on it and view fewer total pages. Moreover, visitors are likely to avoid slow websites and are less likely to convert. All in all, slow websites make for a poor user experience.
The good news is, you can do something about it. First, identify the source of the problem. This could be an excessive number of active plugins, or poor image optimization, or any of numerous other factors. You can use GTMetrix to help identify the problem and then work on fixing it.
Those using content management systems like WordPress can easily fix most issues with a simple plugin. There are free plugins for just about anything and some like W3 Total Cache even fix several issues at once.
The one thing plugins can’t fix is your choice of hosting. You must take care of that on your own. If you have a poor website host, all aspects of your website’s performance suffer. You’re paying for hosting so you should at least choose the right hosting provider.
